Introduction of Sustainable Disposal method for Laboratory Waste.

Improper waste disposal from Laboratory can harm the environment and the health of the public and other living organisms. As per the guidance of the senior management of Central Environmental Authority and as an initiative of the laboratory a novel program to manage wastewater generated from testing laboratories was officially launched by Mr.P.B.Hemantha Jayasinghe, Director General of Central Environmental Authority on 2021.12.06 at the CEA head office laboratory premises.
This occasion was held with the participation of Deputy Director Generals of Central Environmental Authority and the laboratory staff as a collective effect to make this program a success.
Before implementation of this solution  the wastewater generated from CEA central laboratory and all regional laboratories was subjected to primary treatment and then discharged through wastewater treatment plant of CEA and the expired chemicals and other  laboratory solid waste was disposed through the  INSEE ECOCYCLE LANKA (Pvt) Ltd in  proper manner with time to time.
According to this new solution the wastewater generated from central and regional laboratories of CEA that comprise of harmful chemicals to the environment is discharged by an integrated waste management system through INSEE ECOCYCLE LANKA (Pvt) Ltd in a more effective way.
This Sustainable management program focuses to minimize adverse environmental impacts such as minimizing soil pollution, minimizing adverse impacts to water and aquatic life and specially preventing ground water pollution by which it is expected to strengthen the process of environmental protection.
Director General emphasized  that this program is a timely need to minimize the impacts to human and environment by the discharge of wastewater from testing laboratories that comprises of harmful chemicals. Action has been taken by the Environmental protection division to provide the required guidance and instructions to replicate the same sustainable solution in the future to all the laboratories in the country such as in universities, hospitals, schools etc.
