With parallel to the World Environment Day, there are several programs conducted by the Uva province office of CEA to mark the event. Electronic Waste Management in Badulla Divisional Secretariat area, Catchment area conservation in the Haliela Divisional Secretariat area and Promoting organic farming and management of empty agrochemical containers in Welimada Divisional Secretariat area are the main programs conducted by the Badulla Office.
The E- waste collection event organized in Wheels Park on 31st May 2017, Badulla. Chief Secretary of provincial Council, Secretary Provincial Ministry of Local Government and Education, Commissioner Of Local Government, Additional District Secretary, Assistant Commissioner of Local Government, Commissioner Municipal Council, Municipal Secretary, officials of local authorities, University of Uva Wellassa, Officials of Prison Planters Association-Badulla etc. were attended in this event. Addressing the gathering the Chief Secretary highlighted the necessity of establishment of a permanent centre for e waste collection in the province. In this event approximately 05 tons of E- waste was collected.
The catchment area conservation program was held on 2nd June 2017 at Spring Valley Vidyalaya with the participation of students of both Spring Valley Vidyalaya and Kottegoda Tamil Vidyalaya. In this program planting of Kumbuk trees in spring catchment, planting of fruit tree in both schools, Aware school children on catchment conservation through lectures and printed materials, Aware students on water quality testing methods and Donation of water tanks and waste collection bins for schools were the main events of the program. Divisional Secretary, Estate Superintendent, Zonal Director, Education, principals of both schools together with students and staff as well staff of CEA were participated in this event. Both Schools were donated 500 liter capacity water tanks, waste collecting bins and Tamil Medium books and leaflets related to environmental conservation.
In order to commemorate the WED 2017 the CEA organized an event together with Agrarian Services Department and Divisional Secretariat to make aware the importance of organic farming and the need for action on empty agrochemical containers. The event consisted of a lecture on organic farming, sharing experiences of a school child on manufacturing organic fertilizer and the possibility of recycling empty agrochemical containers.
The Organic Farming promotion program was held on 29th of May at Bogahakubura Agrarian Service Centre with the participation of 50 farmers selected by the Agrarian Services Department, members of CBO, and officials from Divisional Secretariat, Department of Agriculture, Department of Education and the CEA. In the program Farmers were donated with organic fertilizer bags of 50Kg each and the CBO was provided collection bins to be placed in their farmlands to collect empty agrochemical containers.
