CEA has released a report of Thin Polythene Raiding

Manufacturing, trading and usage of any kind of polythene or any polythene related product having the thickness of 20 microns or less has been banned by the regulation published in the Gazette Extra Ordinary No.1466/5 on 10th October 2006. After enforcing this regulation the Waste Management Unit of Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has carried out many thin polythene raiding programs island-wide in collaboration with Regional & the District Office of CEA in last 10 years.
The Central Environmental Authority resumed thin polythene Raiding from beginning of the January 2016. According to the raiding program, 1648 of industries, markets, boutiques, groceries etc was raided in 2016. Among that 254 legal actions  were taken which was using, manufacturing & selling in thin polythene related products having the thickness of 20 microns or less.
The raiding program of 2017 will be implemented throughout the year from March to December covering the whole island. It is planned that each district will conduct at least 15 random raiding events per one day in one month covering sellers and producers. This will be about 225 raiding events throughout the island in the year 2017. The CEA encourage people to use alternate products for polythene which can be minimized the impact from polythene .
