Message of Hon. S. M. Chandrasena, Minister of Environment & Wildlife Resources

Environmental, health and social issues that we face prominently could be identified as climatic changes that take place rapidly, increase of the global temperature, diminishing of forests and bio-diversity, wetlands, demolishing of sensitive environmental system, floods, earth slips, drought, water pollution, agro chemicals and soil pollution, pollution of air, management of mineral resources, industrial pollution, misuse of polythene and plastics, issue of management of solid waste, issues related to the food pattern and food safety, and expansion of  epidemics such as dengue.

New environmental issues are not limited to an area, a province, a country or a zone, but a global aspects of these issues are observed. These environmental issues have arisen in a challenging manner, due to various Western development models. Within this reality, the environment friendly co-existence doctrine has become the present development approach, which has been approved by our ancestors. In the present interpretation, this is the sustainable development.

The vision towards the sustainable development is “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.Thus, under the sustainable development process, it is expected to develop economic development, social equity, environmental conservation and spiritual development in a balanced manner.

As in the present policy statement “Rata Hadana – Saubhagyaye Dakma”, a strong dedication is shown for the achievement of the objectives of the environmental conservation and sustainable development, the responsibility of all of us in the Ministry led by the government is to prepare development models and programs and to implement to achieve these objectives, with a proper monitoring process. I appreciate the dedication of the Central Environment Authority in fulfilling environmental monitoring functions, towards attaining the sustainable development for the well being of the people.
