As a concept of The Ministry of Environment, Central Environmental Authority established the Contingency Response Action Plan for Deterioration of Air Quality in Sri Lanka along with around 15 partners.
Recent episodes of high particle matter (PM) that took place in October through December of the previous years, made it necessary to develop and carry out such an action plan in order to be ready for contingent air quality catastrophes.
In light of this, four committees-technical, steering, implementation, and media - have been established. The first working group meeting was held on November 5, 2024, from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm in the Central Environmental Authority Boardroom, with Director General Mr. P. B. Hemantha Jayasinghe serving as chair and with the participation of relevant stakeholders including Ministry of Environment, Wildlife, Forest Resources, Water Supply, Plantation & Community Infrastructure, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils & Local Government, Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Transport & Highways, Ministry of Mass Media, Ministry of Power & Energy, Sri Lanka Police, Ceylon Electricity Board, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Board of Investment of Sri Lanka, Central Environmental Authority, Urban Development Authority, National Building Research Organization, Department of Labor, , Department of Meteorology, Disaster Management Center and Dr Gayan Bowatte of University of Peradeniya.
