The CEA and CAA seized illegal polythene lunch sheets from Oruwala, Kelaniya and Colombo on last Saturday.

a.    Raid conducted in Oruwala, Athurugiriya

The CEA conducted a raid on banned lunch sheet manufacturing industry, which is located at Oruwala in Athurugiriya Police area, jointly with the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) and Police special Unit of the CEA on 23rd November 2018, Saturday.

 When the raid was conducted the industry was in operation and lunch sheets were being manufactured using HDPE, LDPE materials and calcium. Two extruder machines (15Hp each), one cutting machine were being used for the production process.  It has been revealed that this illegal industry does not possess a valid Environmental Protection License (EPL). The previous EPL has been issued only with respect to recycling polythene and manufacturing shopping bags. The accused company secretly manufactures polythene lunch sheets during night time.  This industry has violated the National Environmental Act since there is no valid EPL and manufactures HDPE lunch sheets in contrary with Regulation No. 2034/34 of 2017 09.01. The CEA pursue legal action against the accused company for these two charges in the Kaduwela Magistrates Courts.

The production stock of half a  ton was seized by the CAA and transported to Dompe Sanitary Landfill Site till the Magistrat’s order is issued for disposal. The seized stock is worth Rs. Four lacks. The company sells illegal products to wholesale traders in People’s Park in Colombo.

b.    Raid conducted in Pattiya Junction in Kelaniya

Another raid was conducted by the CEA jointly with the CAA and police Special Unit, at Pattiya junction in Kelaniya Police area, where a wholesale polythene lunch sheet store is being operated for distribution of illegal polythene lunch sheets to Colombo and other sub urban areas. The seller keeps the store in his two storied house in Pattiya Junction. The seized stock (50 Kg) will be produced to Kelaniya Magistrates Courts and till the order is received it has been stored in Dompe Sanitary Landfill site operated by the CEA.

c.    Raid conducted in People’s park, Colombo

Two wholesale polythene lunch sheet traders in People’s Park, Colombo, were raided on Saturday, 23rd November 2019 by the CEA jointly with the CAA and Police Special Unit and seized a half a ton of illegal polythene lunch sheets which is worth of Rs. four lacks. The accused traders will be produced to Maligakanda Magistrate’s courts and the seized stock will be destroyed with the permission of the courts.
