Technical seminar on Municipal Waste Management which was organized by the collaboration of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was held on 30th August 2018 at the CEA Auditorium. This seminar was forwarded for Technical Officers of all the Local Authorities in Sri Lanka.
With the assistance of University of Ruhuna, University of Peradeniya, Institute of Fundamental Studies and the JICA, SATREPS project (Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development) was initiated and as a product of that project SATREPS Guide for sustainable planning, Management and pollution control of waste land filling in Sri Lanka was prepared for the management of sanitary land fillings using local low cost materials.
Under this ReEB project that SATREPS guide implemented and monitored in three locations of the country, namely Kurunegala, Katharagama and Ratrhnapura.
To observe the progress of the pilot projects and sharing of technical know – how on adoptable, affordable and appropriate site specification solutions for medium and small scale landfill rehabilitation and pollution control as well as appropriate and institutionally acceptable 3R promotion are the main objective for discussion in this seminar.
Environmental Lawyer Jagath Gunawardhan delivered the keynote speech in the program by expressing the legal framwork on this solid waste management. Ms. Sarojini Jayasekara Director, Waste Management expressed her ideas about the present pollution aspects of solid waste management in Sri Lanka.
Mr. J M U Indrarathne, DDG\ Waste Management, Prof. Ken Kawamoto from University of Saitama, Japan and Dr. (Mr.) Naofumi SATO, Chief Consultant, ReEB Waste Project made their presentations on “Shibhushi Model” and future of solid waste management in Sri Lanka, Concept of SATREPS Guide and Utilization of draft 3Rs manual & Landfill site operational manual respectively.
Officials from Local Authorities, Provincial Councils, CEA, National Solid Waste Management support Centre, and JICA expert Dr. (Ms.) Yoko ONUMA, also participated and presented the technical details.
