Green Sand Ferry Competition

Under the supervision of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) jointly with the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has organized the Green Sand Ferry Competition to motivate people to practice Eco friendly practices in the sand ferry.
To aware CEA officers about this concept, an awareness program was conducted by the GSMB on 6th August 2018 at the Auditorium of the CEA.
Mr. Chandrarathne Pallegama, Chairman CEA delivered the welcome speech and said that, this concept is highly appreciated, but many issues, encounter with the sand mining in Rivers. River bank erosion, the below down of the river bed and intrusion of sea water to the river are the main problematic issues facing at the present. As a solution for all these issues this will be a good opportunity to create a green environment in sand ferries.
Mr. Asela Iddawela, Chairman, GSMB addressed the gathering and said that as a non-renewable natural resources, those minerals has to be used in a sustainable manner. He further stated that the responsibility of the GSMB is to supply sand to the country while protecting the environment.
Eng. D Sajjana De Silva, Senior Director, Mines, GSMB, Mr. Ajith De Silva, Director, Ministry of Mahaweli Development & Environment and Dr. I. Dissanayake from Institute of Environment Professionals Sri Lanka were also expressed their views on this competition.
Dr. C H E R Siriwardhane, Director General, GSMB delivered the vote of thanks and senior officers from both CEA & GSMB were participated in the occasion.
