Kick off Seminar for Pilot Project on the Project on the Project of Pollution Control and Reduction of Environmental Burden in Solid Waste Management (ReEB Waste)

Technical seminar on Municipal Waste Management which was organized by the collaboration of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was held on 27th October 2017 at the CEA Auditorium. This seminar was forwarded for Technical Officers of all the Local Authorities in Sri Lanka.
With the assistance of University of Ruhuna, University of Peradeniya, Institute of Fundamental Studies and the JICA, SATREPS project (Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development) was initiated prior to this and as a product of that project SATREPS guide for sustainable planning, Management and pollution control of waste land filling in Sri Lanka guide was prepared for the management of sanitary land fillings using local low cost materials.
Under this ReEB project that SATREPS guide going to be implemented and monitored in three locations of the country, namely Kurunegala, Katharagama and Ratrhnapura.
Solid Waste Management is one of the burning issues in Sri Lanka. There are several solutions have been taken by different governments, but the problem is still there. To address these issues and also to aware the Local Authorities, Provincial Councils and other relevant Institutions on this regards, legislation and provision are  the main objective for discussion in this seminar. A good example of ongoing project was explained.
By addressing the gathering Prof. Lal Mervin Dharmnasiri, Chairman of the CEA said that at the present, Sri Lanka does not allow to import post consume materials to the country as the final disposal destination. Also the waste generation in the country has increased due to economic development and 55% of the generated waste can be composted.
Mr. K.H. Muthukudaarachchi, DDG, EPC Unit also express his ideas about the provisions and legislation on Solid Waste Management and how do we adapt to managing on waste in domestic level using reduction, reuse and recycling principles.
Dr. Gamunu Herath, Senior Lecture, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya presented basic details about the SATPEPS Project. Mr. J.M.U. Indrarathne, Deputy Director General, Waste Management, Mr. Athula Ilangasinghe, Director National Solid Waste Management Centre also participated in the event.
Officials from Local Authorities, Provincial Councils, CEA, National Solid Waste Management support Centre, and JICA expert Dr. (Ms.) Yoko ONUMA, Chief Advisor and Dr. (Mr.) Naofumi SATO Leader of the expert also participated and presented the technical details.
